don't know what to do. If I go to an emergency room they won't remotely understand the surgery I've had. And lenox hill doesn't seem to fucking HAVE an emergency department.
Can I drink a bunch of Pepto? Or Maalox?

What kind of meds did you get discharged with? Take a look at those, maybe we can think of something there that could help (or might be a culprit).
How's your fluid intake? Are you vomiting or "just" in misery with nausea? Gagging? Dry heaving? Reflux?

Got discharged with 10 units long-acting insulin at night, l-thyroxine (for thyroid), vicodin as needed, and prevacid, which doesn't seem to do shit.
Not vomiting, but very much feeling like I want to. No to the others.
Feels like gall bladder attack, but lost my gall bladder in 2004. Can't stop burping, which is leaving me very short of breath. The burps offer no relief. i'm a bit frightened.

I have no advice, except to take deep breaths and sips of electrolytes. Go for help if you are scared.

You've been nauseous since you came home, right?
How long did you stay in the hospital after surgery?
I saw where you had tried drinking a protein shake. That might be too much for you right now. Try to stick with clear liquids for awhile. Sugar popsicles and SF Jello are pretty gentle, too, and count as clear liquids.
If you are vomiting and losing a lot of fluids, don't hesitate to call Roslin. His answering service will call him with any emergency. He can tell you where you need to go and pave the way so they'll know how to treat you or come in himself. Dehydration can turn deadly very quickly.
Otherwise, I vomited for three straight days after surgery, while I was still in the hospital. I don't handle opioids or anesthesia well.
At 6 years out, I still get nauseous when my stomach is empty. Keep the container of Jello next to you and be sure to eat a teaspoon or two every hour or so. Take tiny sips of liquid frequently.
I know the hell you are going through right now and, while it does take some time, it DOES get better. Promise.

As we all know I don't know crap about crap! But to my understanding 5 plus hours in surgery was I felt like total kill me now shit for a pretty good while. If I remember your earlier post weren't you und for like 7 hours? That is a whole lot of anesthesia and is going to take a bit to get out of your system This truffling it out part now? Worst ever! IT WILL PASS... On my 4th day I did not want to leave the hospital and fought with Dr. Kini. I could not imagine facing the world like that but he insisted it was way better than staying and chancing a hospital born infection! You will do great, we all did once we realized that, that which does not kill us, makes us feel miserable and like we should want to be dead! I promise it will get better, in fact I am sure we all do! And for being a trooper and needing a smile.... EXALT!!!

Oh MaggieSara, I'm so sorry. I believe I was told Pepto was ok. Let me find my handbook and check but I was discharged with Ondansetron HCL 4 mg (Zofran) and Compazine 10 mg. Would your doctor call either of these in right now for you? Do you have a 24 hour pharmacy close that your friend could go to? I'm still fighting nausea but it's getting less. You were under a long time my friend like I was. So that takes time to get over. Also have you checked your sugar? Is it too high or too low? I was released without any of my diabetes meds. Do that now! Below 80 call your doctor, over 250 call your doctor.

Ditto on both counts here. I can't take opiates. And even if it means you take one small bite an hour, try to keep something on your stomach. I would add to try hot tea. It really helped my stomach relax and digest. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using proboards

So sorry you are having a tough time. I have a terrible time with vicodin! I take promethazine for nausea. It makes you sleepy and the doctors are stingy with it but Zofran does nothing for me when I feel pucky.
I hope you get relief soon!

Maggie, it sounds similar to what happened to me in the hospital, I was burping like crazy and it started to feel like every sip I took was going to come back up and then it did, and the some. Happened 3 separate times. Turned out my stomach wasn't emptying and they gaved me reclan (sp?) to make things start moving downward and it helped tremendously. I don't know if it's the same thing or not but I would call the answering service and see what the dr says. I called at least 4 times during the first 2 weeks home, between my blood sugar being crazy low to my incisions not healing right, that's why they have an answering service in the first place. Don't let yourself feel worse physically and emotionally all night/weekend

Lenox Hill definitely has an ER. I've been there. If you go there they will call Dr Roslin. But you can also email him yourself, he's really good about replying. I just pm'd you his email address.

I can only echo what Kelly and everyone else has said; I don't do well with anesthesia or narcotic pain medication, so I was super nauseous, I was prescribed anti-nausea med. The detox process from all the crud we get pumped with for surgery can take awhile, and you were under 7 hours. Hang in there my dear, it really will get better, and as Joanne, NYB, etc have said, call/email Roslin if you are worried.
I thought the same thing about the protein shake and pea soup - stick to clears for now, sf jello and popsicles, broth, and stay hydrated, this really is the most important right now, you can worry about protein and vitamins in a little bit. Walking does indeed relieve the gas. Get through this first week post op, it's the worst, and then week by week you'll start to improve. Might still feel like death warmed over, but it WILL get better! Hugs and keep that kitty close for comfort!

Thanks is so much folks. I am back in the hospital -- came to the ER at about 1 this morning and am now feeling a lot better thanks to 12 hours of MEDS and fluids. Hope to go home tomorrow

Glad to hear you decided things just weren't right and went to the ER. It is sometimes hard to know what is to be expected, and what is a sign of trouble since this is such new territory for us. Sounds like dehydration and the fluids will fix you right up!

Hope to go home tomorrow Oh honey, you did the right thing! Remember, be very very gentle with yourself, you are healing from a MAJOR surgery that was even more complicated than thought. You will get through this, it is normal to feel horrible, be slapping your forehead "what did I do", for a million things to run in and out of that savvy, hard-working full head of yours. One day at a time, and you know we are here for you.

Sorry you are having a rough go Maggie, but going to the ER was absolutely the smart thing to do! Get some zofran for when you go home.

So glad you went to the ER...here's hoping you feel better fast. Now stay away from the opaque liquid for a while...stick with clear liquids for a few more days. And remember to sip, sip, sip and walk, walk, walk - I know easy for me to say. Hang in there...give your body a chance to recover from MAJOR surgery. Hugs.

So glad you're there...I mean not *glad* but...haha okay you know what the hell I mean!
It never ceases to amaze me how phenomenal i can feel after even ONE bag of I.V. fluids. Once dehydration kicks in, it's a slippery slope to disaster. I also found this out the hard way when I first got home post op.
We live and learn. Glad you're on the mend sweetie!! (((((HUGS)))))

I did not see anyone say to use a sippy cup but that is what I was told to do. With a sippy cup you get a lot less air and it helped me a LOT! Also for some of us water itself makes us feel nauseated, I add a flavor like Crystal Lite to my drinks.
