I guess I am a hybrid. I started out with a DS. At least I think it was a DS. Given my surgeon's history it could have been anything. That was 9 years ago. I had no pre op education and no real post op follow up. Because I ate crap and because whatever was done to me caused me to have chronic bacterial overgrowth I suffered with gas, bloating and diarrhea from day one.
I was also very sick and fatigued all the time. Probably because I wasn't supplementing the way I should of. And I still managed to regain 100 lbs. Eating a diet of practically all refined carbs will do that to you.
To make a long story short I decided that the reason I was so sick was because of my surgery and I went back to my surgeon asking for a reversal. He was more then happy to give me a revision. It seems that many of his patients had issues. Gee, I wonder why. I was told I couldn't be reversed, only revised so I wouldn't malabsorb so much. He said he would lengthen my common channel from 100 cc to 200 cc. He also said he would give me a RNY pouch. I agreed only because I figured if I could regain 100 lbs with malabsorption I could really do damage without it. It was out of fear. I had been so sick that all I wanted was to get better.
From the time I saw the surgeon until I had the revision was 8 days. Not enough time to do any kind of research or talk to anyone about what I was doing. It felt very rushed but I was so desperate to feel better that I didn't care.
It wasn't until after I had my revision that I started posting on OH and found out that my surgeon had a bad reputation with the DS. I discovered that just about all of his patients had issues. I have only heard of one patient of his that didn't have regain, that is if they managed to lose any weight to begin with. I know that he didn't like the malabsorption and made my stomach way too large. I never felt any restriction and was soon able to eat as much as I could pre op.
Anyway, by the time I found this out it was too late to do anything so I have had to accept things. I didn't find out until six months later that he had removed my remnant stomach. I honestly don't remember being told anything about that before hand.
So I have had to make the best with what I have. I decided when I had my revision that I needed to stop eating refined carbs since I had such a problem with them before. I followed my post op diet to the letter. I loaded up on protein and drank a lot of fluids. The weight really came off.
I also was able to finally get a full set of labs done at six months out. Surprisingly they weren't that bad but I had already been supplementing properly for 6 months.
I did find out I dumped when I had something that I thought was sugar free and it turned out it wasn't. That was very unpleasant but it did reconfirm my decision to avoid sugar.
I reached my first goal and kept losing, made my final goal and still kept losing. I was increasing my intake but still losing. For a while it was hard because when I tried to increase my healthy carbs and fats I would dump but fortunately that got better and I haven't dumped in months. I finally stopped losing at about 100 lbs and I'm hoping to bounce back to about 120 lbs eventually. I am eating over 2000 calories a day so I must still be malabsorbing. I eat every few hours, mostly high protein. I avoid all sugar and things with gluten but other then that I eat what I want.
I hope I am welcome to post here. I know I have had some issues in the past with some people but I was told that this is a new start and I hope people will give me a chance in spite of my past stupidity.
