I was taking statins pre-surgery and with them, it was an average of 150. Before I was taking statins, it was about 230. So, I guess my tendency is to have high cholesterol. I'll just have to monitor it and see how it goes. I'm not on them now and, if it stays under 200, I guess I'm ok, right? Under 200 is fine, but I'd keep a close eye on it. But, I would say from 230 to 187 without drugs is a nice step in the right direction. Yes, it is good. However, 150 to 187 isn't so good. Not bad but, not good, either, considering that 150 was with statins, and 187 is post-surgery without statins. I'll monitor it closely. Thanks so much for your help!

You cholesterol dropped by 80 when you went on statins pre-op. In a worst case scenario, should your levels climb to 200 instead of continuing to drop, your levels could drop to 120 back on statins. So your DS is going to help you control this no matter what happens.

Sorry guys heading offshore. Kel thanks for answering the questions about saturated fats. My cholesterol went down to 1.4 . That is almost danger zone. My cholesterol prior to surgery was 6.7....worryingly high. The DS decimated my stored fat internally as well as cosmetically. Now after eating like the greasy spoon queen my cholesterol is 4.2. Awesomely average. Eat fat. It is simple and it will save you hassle, constipation, poor skin turgor, neurological disease.
If I told you to eat protein it would be a no brained. We have been indoctrinated utterly regarding fat. THOSE RULES DO NOT APPLY TO YOU ANYMORE! enjoy every second of this freedom.
Now I've just had 18g of protein and fat from cashew nuts and it took 5mins of absent minded chomping. Nom!

Very interesting thread that I am saving. Attempting to learn all I can, and this for sure helps. I HATE lowfat, fat free stuff as it tastes nasty. Will be nice to eat the real deal and not feel guilty.

Ok so question: Should our fat intake me this high during the losing stage or not until maintenance? My nut went crazy today when I suggested adding a Tablespoon of PB to my protein shake every day. She said it would lead to more and then to much. She also had a cow when I suggested that 1/4 cup of almonds was 13 grams of protein, but only 76 calories via the DS math. What are your thoughts?

Ok so question: Should our fat intake be this high during the losing stage or not until maintenance? Fat intake should be high from recovery onwards, as soon as your tummy can handle it. During the loss period, the moister, fattier meat "sat" much better in my tummy than the so called "better" cuts. Dark meat was preferable to white. Pork butt chops were preferable to pork loin. The dog has been disappointed since my DS. I used to give her the fatty pieces I cut off the meat. Now she sees NO table scraps - this fat is all mine!

I'm going to post this in here since it's all about fat anyway!
I recently started taking 3 fish oil capsules from Costco and discovered that when taken with my calcium it prevented me from getting stopped up and gassy. This is a major win and my dry skin has started to dissipate.
Here's the question, since we malabsorb the fat if I take it with calcium like I am, is it possible I'm just sweeping that out my system too? In which case, am I doing myself more harm than good?
Thoughts?

I don't know if there's any proof that your fat stuff is sweeping out your calcium, but I'd be wondering about it, too, if I were you.

If (and I know that's a big "if") the fat sweeps the calcium supplement, would it stand to reason that excess fat would also sweep other nutrients from foods also?

If (and I know that's a big "if") the fat sweeps the calcium supplement, would it stand to reason that excess fat would also sweep other nutrients from foods also? There are a couple of surgeons who make that claim, but again, I have yet to see any reliable evidence to support it. The best we can do is go by our lab results and overall health indicators.

I just want to add that when I add these fish oil supplements, it doesn't cause oil slicks. My bm's are "normal" for me. I'm not seeing great globs of goo or anything.
