Was anyone put on blood thinners after surgery? My sister was telling me that she was after her RNY because one of the biggest concern for complications was blood clots??? Any info on this??

I was up walking the day after surgery, so they didn't put me on anything.
Some doctors place IVC filters and others use inflatable hose that compress your legs.

From what I've been reading (and from my own experience) the heperin shots are getting to be the norm. Preventing blood clots is good!!

My surgery is on the 16th of April.... they are putting me on Lovenox injections for 10 days after surgery. Dr Spencer does that with all of this patients. And we also use the leg squeezers while resting.

I had the Heparin shots both in the hospital and I took some home with me. I was on them for about two weeks total.
Because of my long flight home, I had to shoot up right as my flight started to board per Dr. Ungson's orders.
I am highly squeamish about needles and there I was in a Mexican airport public bathroom, sweating bullets from nerves and shooting up. ;D

DVT prophylaxis is standard of care (or should be) for patients in the hospital, I know it is where I work. The treatment protocol may vary depending on the circumstance and may include one or more methods such as early ambulation, heparin, lovenox, bilateral sequential compression boots etc nursing.uchc.edu/Pharmacy/docs/DVT%20Prophylaxis-10-11-08.pdf

I was on heparin for 4 weeks after surgery. I was also in surgery for 6 hours instead of 4 and they did a lot more work than originally expected. I was 371 at surgery also, It really wasn't a big deal. You put it in your stomach or thigh. I could barely feel it.

I had heparin given to me before both my RNY and my revision to DS. For my RNY, that was all I got. But in the years between my RNY and my revision to DS, I ended up having a near-fatal pulmonary embolism. So after my DS, I came home with Lovenox and am now on Warfarin for life.

I had RNY 6 years ago, and had an IVC filter inserted. I think I would have preferred the shots, since I had to return after I lost 100 lbs to have the filter removed.

Heperin for 10 days or so after surgery. No troubles, easy to administer.
