My 80 year old MO mother was just admitted to Fairfax Hospital with what has been diagnosed as a bowel obstruction - can anyone tell me if he takes Medicare? Can anyone help me get in touch with him?

Medicare is listed as insurance he accepts on the OtHer website. It also says he accepts medicare on healthgrades. I do not know how accurate that is. The only phone numbers I see for him are (703) 778-6000. I pray everything works out with your Mom.

Amazing! I was able to name drop, and Elariny's surgical Fellow took over the case (Elariny is out of the country)! She read the CT scan while I was on the phone with her, and wow - she was SO great. She said she was on her way over to the hospital to see mom right away.
There is a question about whether she has a loop of bowel impacted in a 3.7 cm hernia. They hope to avoid surgery - mom is a complex mess of comorbidites, morbid obesity, diabetes, CHF and a belly full of mesh. I feel better knowing Elariny's team is on the case!
I also know one of the head nurses on the surgical floor - she will also watch out for mom's care.
Thanks MsVee!
I'll post when I hear more.

The doctor called back after visiting mom tonight (!). Her belly is not distended. Mostly she is medical at this point - one leg is very swollen (U/S was negative for blood clots), her diabetes is not controlled, dehydrated from vomiting, a-fib/pradaxa dosage/bleeding needs to be addressed, the hernia didn't seem to have intestine incarcerated - she's a mess but stable for now. I'll know more about how she's doing after I hear from my sister in the AM. After having to put my cat Isis to sleep this afternoon, I thought I was stressed out plenty. Thanks mom. A friend emailed me this evening and told me she has a refrigerator magnet that says "I'll have a caffe mocha vodka valium latte to go please" - that sounds PERFECTLY DELICIOUS right now.

Yikes, sorry about all this. Loving the power of the internet and our community and how you could cut right to the chase and get your mom in the best hands.
Yeah, you deserve that latte right about now.

Diana, I'm local for you if not for your mom, so let me know if there is anything I can do...like stirring up the that mocha vodka valium concoction for you. So sorry about Isis. She had a good life with you and Charles. I hope the medical team can get your mother's numerous medical conditions under control not that she's in the hospital and sort out the hernia business. Sounds like she's in good hands.

Morning update on Mom:
* Belly not distended, not in pain and she farted (YAY!). * Her leg is less swollen. * They are managing her hydration - apparently she arrived at the ER in acute kidney failure due to dehydrate (and of course, kidneys in an 80 year old diabetic are vulnerable)
I'm hoping they keep her long enough to get her blood sugars under control and to figure out the rectal bleeding that she was supposed to see her regular doctor about this week - he took her off of Pradaxa, which of course ups her risk of clots from her A-fib and inactivity.
Crisis seems to be under control. For now.
I have an appointment for cut and color this afternoon - THAT will be almost as therapeutic as the valium/vodka latte.

It's a real circle of life (cue Elton John).
Not since I was a small child would you hear me cheering an 80 year old farting and here I am again. YAY! ;D
Glad she's in good hands.

OMG, you've been going through a lot for a long time. I admire your stamina and your sanity. I feel for your loss of your kitty. I had to do that Christmas Eve 2010 and it ripped my heart out. That's him in my avatar. He was the love of my life.
I am glad you have distractions around you to help keep you occupied and not obsessing. It certainly helps to have competent doctors caring for your mother. Honestly, doctors can make or break a situation like this so good for you for having the wits to track down a top notch team of competent MDs.
Please remember to take care of yourself!

Just a quick update: mom is doing better. They took out the NG tube and started her on broth, but they think there is still a (partial?) blockage. She will have a CT scan tomorrow.
Her leg is less swollen, they have her on Lovenox, and are getting her blood sugars and kidney stuff under control. They are still worried she has a blockage, but she is a poor surgical risk - maybe an adhesion or a wayward piece of mesh from her hernia surgery. I hope not.
Dr. Hill, Elariniy's surgical Fellow, was WONDERFUL. If anyone has an email addy for Dr. E, please PM it to me - I want to tell him how I appreciated how she took care of my mother - and me - during this stressful time.
